In the year 2014, for a period of six months, I was a student at the “South African Chefs Academy”, Cape Town, South Africa, where I earned a certificate in culinary arts (part-time). My experience at the school was awesome. As of then, the school was located at “Black River Pack”, Observatory, in Cape Town, about 15 minutes walk from the observatory train station.

After my time as a student, I got to understand better how prospective students feel when they decide to do a culinary arts program.

Issues will always arise in our lifetime. We’ll also find ways to respond or handle whatever issues it might be.

These are things that we undergo at every point in time. There’ll be emotional reactions towards these developments.

Events that impact our lives positively are what we’ll always desire.

If things are suggested to us, we’ll examine it to see how it’ll be beneficial to our livelihood.

As humans, we understand there will be changes, but we want changes for the better in all aspects of our lives.

We’re in a world that is fast-changing in terms of development. The learning or academics in this age continue to beckon for our attention. 

Lots of things come into mind in the process of contemplating what study will best fit into our career aspirations.

There are so many options when it comes to studying and choosing a career.

Institutions of learning attract prospective students in terms of taking up a study with them.

As there are various courses one can do in their institutions — they enjoin prospective students to consider taking up one.

Definitely, it’ll come to the point when a prospective student will settle for a particular course of study.

Why should I do culinary arts?

When we’re pondering over something, it might take hours, days, months, or even a year for one to reach a decision on a matter, depending on what the issue is.

Evaluation of an idea needs time for one to make a decision. Taking a step in the right direction is crucial, this’ll make us feel fulfilled when we achieve our heart’s desire. Getting information about what makes people successful in life, particularly in the area of a career is something right to do.

If you want to do culinary arts, you should think properly if it’s the right place to be. Definitely, it’ll be the right place for anyone. The point here is, that one needs to gather proper information about the industry.

This is information someone wanting to do culinary arts should seek to know:

Working Hours: As many hours are spent in culinary school kitchens, it’s an indication of what to expect if you eventually become a chef, and the hours involve standing.

Job Nature: The job will require you to work with a knife constantly. You’ll be handling spoons for cooking at all times. The job requires that you be fast in movement while working. Most times, your hands will be in contact with water (hand washing). So decide if you want a career in such circumstances.

It’s important to have your mind made up so you don’t have to drop out during your studies or after you’ve graduated and started working, for the kitchen is a place of “heat” and “smoke”.

Think thoroughly about this occupation and set your mind to be in for the career (culinary career).

Going into culinary arts study, it’s assumed that students have gotten proper information on what to expect or they’ve decided to study culinary arts because of their passion to do culinary work.

Where should I study culinary arts?

Location will come into consideration when we’re to do certain things. When one is invited for a meeting at a particular place, you’ll think about how to navigate your way to the venue. Location will also depend on the choice of school to attend.  

When you’ve researched culinary schools, you should decide what culinary institution you feel will be best for you to attend. As a result, such schools might not be in the city or town where you live. 

There must be something that makes you want to experience education at that particular school, maybe because of the school’s reputation or because of the place or town where the school is located.

It could be that your choice of school is because you have friends or relations situated in that place, town, or city.

It could be a place you’ve not stayed in before and want to use your education as a chance to experience there. There are usually reasons why we want to be at a particular location.

Distance is important when considering a location for study — so choose a location of study that’ll be convenient for you.

How long will it take to do a culinary arts program?

Duration of events is a factor in human life. We want to know how long it’ll take to be involved in a process.

This’ll bother on the nature of the program we want to do, even that, whether long or short period program, we’ll want to know what the duration will be.

The following is information on the duration or length of a culinary arts program:

• Certificate In Culinary Arts: This will take between 6 months or more.

• Diploma In Culinary Arts: This will take about a year or more.

• Associate Degree In Culinary Arts: Usually, a 2-year program.

• Culinary Arts (Bachelor’s Degree): This is a 4-year program.

What are the challenges when doing a culinary arts program? 

For any goal you set for yourself in life to achieve, there’ll be challenges to test if you really mean to succeed in your endeavor. 

There will be developments in the form of challenges to stand in your way to achieve success in what you desire to be. This development is something we encounter in life as humans. 

So, whatever it is that comes to you as a challenge, do bear in mind that the only way you can overcome is determination. Believe in what you want to achieve and be determined to succeed. 

What are your job prospects after studying culinary arts?

The hospitality industry is creating jobs and more jobs are being created every day. The prospect of finding a job after graduation is certain.

Entry-level positions are always available, and it’s a starting point to build up a successful culinary career.
