Detroit-Style Pizza Dough Preparation Method

Detroit-Style Pizza Dough Preparation Method

A pizza dough

Elevate your homemade pizza with this authentic Detroit-style pizza dough — light, airy, and perfectly crisp around the edges.

It’s easier than you think and miles better than anything from a tube.

Ingredients:

  • 2½ cups + 1 tbsp (325g) bread flour

  • 1 cup (240g) warm water (about 105°F)

  • 1 tsp instant yeast

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 1¼ tsp salt

  • 1 tbsp olive oil (plus extra for the pan)

Preparation:

  1. Mix: Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar in a bowl. Add flour, salt, and olive oil. Mix until a sticky dough forms.

  2. Knead & Rise: Knead lightly for 2–3 minutes. Cover and let rise at room temperature for 2 hours.

  3. Pan Stretch: Oil a 10×14″ Detroit-style pan generously. Stretch dough to fill the pan (let it rest if it resists).

  4. Second Rise: Cover and let rise again for 45–60 minutes.

  5. Top & Bake: Add cheese to the edges, then sauce. Bake at 500°F for 12–15 minutes until golden and crisp.

Say goodbye to soggy crust and hello to the crackly, chewy perfection of real Detroit-style pizza.
